چکیده

EXPERIMENTS in our laboratory have demonstrated that memory fixation of a shockavoidance task in the goldfish can be blocked by puromycin or acetoxycycloheximide (AXM)$ when administered within 1 hr after training, but not at later times (AGRANOFF and KLINGER, 1964; DAVIS, BRIGHT and AGRANOFF, 1965; AGRANOFF, DAVIS and BRINK, 1965, 1966). The present studies report the effects of these compounds as well as actinomycin D on the incorporation of [3H]leucine into goldfish brain protein.

Studies on RNA in goldfish brain. I. Isolation and in vivo labeling.

The metabolism of brain RNA has been the subject of several recent investigations 7,t6-19,27. Interest stems in part from reports of changes in amount of total brain RNA under various functional stresses4,Z6, ao, changes in labeling patterns or in base ratios in individual brain cells with training13,14 and from studies showing that various antimetabolites block memory formation2,5,10. Studies ...

The effect of memory blocking antibiotics and their analogs on acetylcholinesterase.

The ability of antibiotics to inhibit acetylcholinesterase was measured in homogenates of goldfish brain. Puromycin aminonucleoside was the most potent inhibitor followed by puromycin, cycloheximide and acetoxycycloheximide. Puromycin effectively impaired retention of active-avoidance learning in goldfish when injected either immediately before or after training, while puromycin aminonucleoside...

Chemical studies on memory fixation in goldfish.

A striking characteristic of this decade in biochemistry is the introduction of selective blocking agents as tools for research. A maior area of application has been in studies on nucleic acid and protein synthesis 1. As findings in diverse areas are correlated, the details of the selective nature of these toxic substances become known, adding to their value. The use of selective blocking agent...

EFFECTS OF SERUM AND PROTEIN SYNTHESIS INHIBITORS ON POLYMORPHONUCLEAR NEUTROPHIL APOPTOSIS

In this study the programmed cell death (apoptosis) of human neutrophilic granulocytes was investigated in the presence and absence of fetal calf serum (FCS), cycloheximide and actinomycin-D. The results show that when FCS is omitted from cultures, apart from a decrease in viability, the percentage of apoptotic cells and DNA fragmentation increases. Apoptosis is accelerated in serum withdra...

Different Lethal Effects of Mitomycin C and Actinomycin D during the Division Cycle of Hela Cells

The lethal actions of mitomycin C and actinomycin D were followed during the division cycle of HeLa cells. The cells were most susceptible to a 2 hr pulse of mitomycin C during the G(1) phase, whereas their sensitivity to actinomycin D was most pronounced in the S phase. Posttreatment of the cells with acetoxycycloheximide, a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis, increased the survival (colony...
